When the mass killings of Jews began after the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, the Zionist youth movements were the first to realize that the Nazis planned to murder all of European Jewry. They issued a call to organize resistance on January 1, 1942. This is the story of Jewish resistance in Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary, in which the youth movements played a leading role.

This event is supported by Darchei Noam’s Adult Education Committee and Youth & Education Programming.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Amichai Geva is now a licensed tour guide, specializing in tours of northern Israel. He taught the Holocaust course at Haifa University for tour guides. Amichai was born in Montreal and was active in Ken Gilboa (i.e. the Montreal branch) of Hashomer Hatzair from 1967-70. He made aliyah (moved to Israel) as a student in the history department of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1970, and joined Kibbutz Shomrat (where he still lives) with his garin (aliyah group) upon graduation in 1973. In 1980, Amichai and his wife Yaffa were shlichim in Ken Nir Oz in Toronto (i.e. emissaries to the Toronto branch of Hashomer Hatzair) until 1982. In 1992, Amichai was in charge of the English-speaking desk in World Hashomer Hatzair in Tel Aviv; at the same time, Amichai studied for his master's degree in history at Tel Aviv University.
