Human Rights Shabbat

Saturday, 6 December, 2014 14 Kislev 5775

10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

On December 6, along with over 150 other North American synagogues, Darchei Noam will celebrate Human Rights Shabbat. This annual event was initiated by T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights and continues to be sponsored by this organization.

Dr. Martin Klein, a long time member of Darchei Noam’s Social Justice Advocacy Committee, will give a d'var Torah: “How We Treat People in the Criminal Justice System”.

The main points he will examine are

  • Is There a Humane Way to Treat Prisoners that is Rooted within the Jewish Traditions?
  • Will Humane Treatment Will Protect Us from Criminals?

Specifically, he will examine the Harper government’s tough on crime agenda.

Afterward, there will be a post-Kiddush program featuring speaker Harry Nigh, a Mennonite Minister, who has devoted much of his life to working with those who have served time in the prison systems and are transitioning back to non-incarcerated life. His talk is entitled, “After the Sentence is Served”.
