SJAC Social Justice Scholar-in-Residence Rabbi Shalom Schachter
Saturday, 19 April, 2014 • 19 Nisan 5774
10:00 AM - 12:00 PMWhat does the story about The Golden Calf have to do with social justice?
On April 19, Shabbat Chol Hamo’ed Pesach, Social Justice Scholar-in-Residence, Rabbi Shalom Schachter, will examine the Torah portion about the repair that needed to be done following the sin of the Golden Calf. What does that Torah portion have to do with Pesach? How does it speak to liberation from oppression? How does it relate to us today? How does the worship of golden Gods create a barrier to securing social justice for all?
Rabbi Tina Grimberg will present certificates to our current and past Scholars-In-Residence in honour of their contributions to knowledge and life at Darchei Noam. Rabbi Shalom Schachter will give a D'var and chant the Haftarah. The previous Scholars-In-Residence will briefly address the congregation. This is a celebratory Shabbat and an occasion to reflect on Justice, a central value of our people.
