Join us for the DN reading circle, focusing on works of interest to liberal Jews. Our unique approach will be to alternate between non-fiction books on Judaism, and novels that treat similar themes.

Next up: Wherever You Go, by Joan Leegant. This novel addresses the challenge of finding a way of living meaningfully as a modern Jew.

Ask the author – Joan Leegant has graciously offered to accept questions from the group. If you have a question for her, please e-mail it to Mark Matchen

Our group meets roughly every six weeks.

Join us for lively discussion in the Yavneh Library, and start building your Jewish library. Please contact Mark Matchen if you are interested or have any questions.

Past Titles:

January 24, 2015: Radical Judaism: Rethinking God and Tradition by Arthur Green. How do we articulate a religious vision that embraces evolution and human authorship of Scripture? The author rethinks such concepts as God, the origins and meaning of existence, human nature and revelation, to construct a new Judaism for the twenty-first century. Order here.

April 25, 2015: As a Driven Leaf, Milton Steinberg's classic novel based on the life of Elisha ben Abuyah. Steinberg's novel wrestles with the 2nd century Jewish struggle to reconcile Rabbinic Judaism both culturally and philosophically with Greek Hellenistic society. In Elisha's struggle, Steinberg speculates about questions and events that may have driven such a man to apostasy, and addresses questions of Jewish self-determination in the Roman Empire, the Bar Kochba Revolt (132-135) and above all, the interdependence of reason and faith. Order here.

June 6: The Significance of Religious Experience, by Howard Wettstein. The author is a philosopher who went from a secular upbringing to Talmudic studies at Yeshiva University. Ultimately, he found a way back to sincere, modern Judaism. His views are of great interest to Reconstructionist Jews. The author has generously consented to take up a few short questions that members in our group submit a week in advance, so get the book and start reading early!
