Don't have central air conditioning or want to reduce its use?
- Use a dehumidifier. The reduced moisture in the air will make a room feel cooler.
- Wear loose outdoor clothing in light colours, preferably cotton, and you will feel cooler. White, beige, and light brown-green shades will attract less mosquitoes and other insects. See https://mosquitojoe.com/blog/what-colors-attract-mosquitoes/
- Tie a wet kerchief around your neck cowboy style.
- Partially fill a "hot water" bottle with cold water and place in the freezer. Use it wrapped in a towel to protect your skin.
- Uncomfortably hot? Blow a fan across a container of ice cubes towards you. Place your feet in a pan of cold water at the same time. A cool tip: freeze a stainless steel bowl of water for use later.
- Cover your wrist, ankles, back of your knee, or crook of your arm with a wet cloth. Alternatively, an ice pack covered with a cloth can be applied to these areas.
- Sponge yourself off with a cool washcloth.
- Really hot and sweaty? Soap yourself down with a washcloth first, then turn on the shower to rinse off. Dry off lightly and leave your hair wet.
- Feeling too hot to fall asleep? Place a pillow or a sheet in a plastic bag and put into the freezer or frig for a few minutes to cool it down. Another idea is to sleep under a damp sheet.
- BEST IDEA: Sit under a large shade tree and relax!
