Earlier this month, Darchei Noam's Grade 4 – 6 Hebrew School students had an opportunity to visit Terrace Gardens, a Toronto retirement home.

The students sang Purim songs with the seniors, led by our dynamic music teacher Mike Bernsein. After, they participated in arts and crafts alongside the seniors, creating characters from the Megillah.

Our students learned about the mitzvah of visiting seniors and experienced firsthand how important it is. Our Hebrew School curriculum aims to expose these young people to the Jewish world outside the synagogue, and a seniors' home is one place where Jewish life exists beyond the synagogue walls. The trip connected them to the broader Toronto Jewish community and gave them the experience of celebrating the holiday in an intergenerational setting.

It is always inspiring to watch students interacting with seniors, working together on activities, and learning together. We look forward to continuing to bring our students to places like Terrace Gardens, giving them the opportunity not just to perform such an important mitzvah, but also exposing them to the Jewish world beyond Darchei Noam.
