Using the insight that Judaism is “the evolving religious civilization of the Jewish People” we will look at the six words of “Shema Yisrael/Listen, Israel!” as a case study.
Beginning with the biblical period, then the rabbinic, medieval, modern and contemporary periods, we will look at law and legends; philosophy and mysticism; hasidic, feminist and academic interpretations.
We will see the ways that the Shema has been a symbolic statement capable of holding multiple layers of meaning across generations of Jewish commentary.
