Second Annual Merkur Lecture

Sunday, 11 December, 2022 17 Kislev 5783

7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Congregation Darchei Noam is proud to announce the Second Annual Merkur lecture on the theme of Equity, Civil Liberties and Social Justice. All are invited to attend this event via Zoom on Sunday, December 11, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm. Advanced registration is required.

This year's lecture, titled "Which Freedoms Matter?" will be delivered by Noa Mendelsohn Aviv, Executive Director and General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA). For over 50 years, the CCLA has been one of Canada's foremost human rights organizations.

Today in Canada, as well as many other countries, calls for freedom are growing louder and more strident. Freedom is now a rallying cry -- often from opposing perspectives -- in fields as wide-ranging as protest rights, religious observance, schooling, speech, racialized, gender and sexual identities. How should competing and conflicting freedom claims be treated?

Join us for a thoughtful discussion of "Which Freedoms Matter?" to consider how to evaluate calls for freedom over matters such as religious attire, the right to strike, free speech and hate.

Noa Mendelsohn Aviv previously practiced law in Israel, and is a widely respected champion of human rights.

Sorry, Registration has ended.
