Emerging Jewish Communities in Brazil and Elsewhere in Latin America

Sunday, 11 December, 2016 11 Kislev 5777

7:30 PM - 10:00 PMSocial Hall

Meet the youngest board member of Kulanu Inc., a US based charity that supports Jewish communities around the world that are emerging or re-emerging, isolated, often forgotten. Daneel Schaechter is being honoured by Kulanu this year for his outstanding work with new Jewish Communities in Brazil, Ecuador and elsewhere.  As Kulanu’s regional coordinator in Latin America, Daneel will share unique stories from his personal experience.

Daneel who lives in New York,  is a  Fullbright Scholar who went to Brazil in 2015 to teach English at a university and to work with Prodeaf, a tech startup that aims to integrate deaf Brazilians into society. He became a teacher, community liaison, and key link to emerging communities of B’nei Anousim, descendants of Jews who were forcibly converted to Catholicism, often referred to as Crypto Jews.  Research suggests that there are potentially 20,000,000 descendants—but how many are returning to Judaism, why, and how?

Daneel Schaechter has a BA in Latin American Studies and Linguistics, graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania; he speaks Yiddish, Hebrew, Portuguese and Spanish fluently. He is an International Strategy Associate, working with Indeed.com , the world’s #1 job site which operates in 50 countries.
